In short

Ari is the area of cafés and quiet side streets, on the BTS Sukhumvit Line north of the centre. Its neighbour Saphan Khwai, more down-to-earth, offers gentler rents and easy access to Chatuchak. An ideal pair for living in Bangkok at a calmer pace without giving up the metro.

Ari is often described as Bangkok's "village". Around the BTS station of the same name, small leafy streets are home to cafés, restaurants, designer shops and old houses, alongside a few recent condos. Just to the north, Saphan Khwai extends the area in a more down-to-earth and affordable version, close to Chatuchak.

1.Atmosphere: who is it for?

Ari appeals for its relaxed feel. It is popular with young Thai professionals, creatives and expats who prefer calm to the bustle of Sukhumvit. At weekends, the cafés along the main street (Phahon Yothin Soi 7, often called "Soi Ari") are full.

The area is also known for having several government offices and ministries nearby, which gives it a weekday neighbourhood life, with plenty of street food at lunchtime.

Ari and Saphan Khwai suit:

  • singles and couples who love calm and cafés;
  • professionals working along the BTS Sukhumvit Line (Siam, Phaya Thai, Mo Chit);
  • people who want a gentler rent without moving away from the metro, especially in Saphan Khwai.

2.Getting around

Both areas are on the BTS Sukhumvit Line:

  • BTS Ari: Victory Monument is one stop away, Siam a few stops (roughly a quarter of an hour);
  • BTS Saphan Khwai: the next station north, before Mo Chit (interchange with MRT Chatuchak Park).

At Siam you can switch to the Silom Line; at Phaya Thai, to the Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi. For Sukhumvit (Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo) the BTS is direct but the journey is longer: allow roughly half an hour.

3.Daily life

In Ari, everything is walkable: cafés, bakeries, Thai and international restaurants, small markets and convenience stores. There are also a few neighbourhood shopping arcades near the station.

In Saphan Khwai, the feel is more commercial, with markets, street food and a large hypermarket. Chatuchak Park and the weekend market are very close, one or two stops away.

For healthcare, several hospitals are within reach around Phaya Thai and Victory Monument. Check which is closest to your future address.

4.What budget?

As of 10 October 2026, our catalogue has two rental listings in these areas:

AreaPropertySizeAdvertised rentStation
Ari1 bedroom (Noble Around Ari)27 m²25,000 THB / monthBTS Ari, 200 m
Saphan Khwai1 bedroom (Haven Phaholyothin)41 m²16,000 THB / monthBTS Saphan Khwai, 750 m

The comparison speaks for itself: Ari comes at a price, especially right by the station, while Saphan Khwai gives you more space for a more modest rent, at the cost of a slightly longer walk.

5.What to check before renting in Ari or Saphan Khwai

  • How quiet it really is: Ari's side streets are peaceful, but Phahon Yothin Road, under the BTS, is very busy. Check which side the bedroom faces.
  • Supply of condos: Ari has fewer big towers than elsewhere. Listings go fast, so be ready to decide quickly.
  • Size: recent one-bedrooms in Ari are often compact. Compare the price per square metre with Saphan Khwai.
  • The walk to the BTS: in Saphan Khwai, seven or eight hundred metres in the midday sun is a real distance. Try it.

7.Neighbouring areas to compare

If you like Ari but the current listings do not fit, look around:

  • Saphan Khwai and Mo Chit, to the north: more commercial, often cheaper, next to Chatuchak Park;
  • Victory Monument and Phaya Thai, to the south: very well served (BTS and Airport Rail Link), more urban and busier;
  • Lat Phrao, further north-east: a junction of three metro lines, with gentle rents and big malls.

These areas share the same BTS line, so your journeys to Siam stay direct. Tell us your budget and workplace, and we will suggest the best options along this line.

8.In short

Ari is one of Bangkok's most pleasant areas for anyone who loves calm and cafés, on a direct BTS line to Siam. Its neighbour Saphan Khwai offers more space for less. Compare with Lat Phrao, further north, for transport and prices.
